My experience: Worldwide Candle Lighting
You have all lit a candle before. It’s simple. Sometimes getting a match or lighter to cooperate is tougher than lighting the candle itself. Unless, of course, you are lighting the candle for someone or something. When there is a purpose it changes your entire perspective of simply lighting a candle. It makes you think. It makes you wonder. It makes you smile. It makes you cry. If you have ever participated in a candlelight vigil of any kind you understand. Continue reading

Chadron State defeats Colorado Mesa, honor “O’B”
Chadron State picked up a victory in the season finale on Saturday in thrilling fashion. The Eagles held off Colorado Mesa, 24-17 in overtime. After the Eagles scored, the defense pushed Mesa into a 4th and 14 situation. The pass near the first down marker was broken up and CSC picked up the win. Continue reading
Victim of Success
Joe Paterno, Plaxico Burress, Dick Cheney, Lauren Cook, Jim Tressel, Tiger Woods……all have one thing in common – They are victims of success. Paterno and Cook have been the latest big names to surface with law-related issues. Cook, a volleyball star at the University of Nebraska, was charged with a felony for leaving the scene of an injury accident. Paterno, an iconic figure in Penn State history, has been linked to the child-sex abuse case of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Continue reading
Taylor Martinez needs to silence critics. Can he?

Martinez has run himself to success in the past. Can he save the Huskers season with his legs? (Photo Courtesy: Husker Locker)
There was a time when Husker fans were excited for Taylor Martinez. As a freshman he could do no wrong as his name circulated in the Heisman-hyped carousel. He slashed opponent defenses and ran Nebraska to an unbeaten record and a No. 5 ranking. Then Texas came to Lincoln. The one game Nebraska fans had been waiting for all season. In the game Martinez mustered just 21 yards on 13 carries and completed just four of his 12 pass attempts in the game. He put the ball on the ground twice, although neither fumble was lost. The Tebow has risen…

It's "Tebow Time" in Denver. John Fox elected to answer the fans chants and play Tebow on Sunday, will it continue after the bye week?
Week 5 of the NFL season gave us a lot to talk about. The 49ers gave an absolute beating to the Tampa Bay Bucs, Eli Manning and Matt Schaub both threw for over 400 yards, the Raiders held of the Texans a day after owner Al Davis passed away, the Eagles, previously known as the Dream Team, fell to 1-4 on the season and so much more. Fans in the mile high city left the stadium happy despite a loss to division rival San Diego. Why were they happy after a loss? Tim Tebow was inserted in to run the offense in the second half. After a struggling Kyle Orton couldn’t get things going in the first half it was time for a change. A change that Denver fans have been asking for since the lockout was lifted. Continue reading
Facebook: It’s evil
When Facebook began it was for a select few college students. Then it opened to all college students. And finally, it became available to anyone who could use a computer or knew someone who could use a computer for them. The idea in the beginning is that people could stay in touch with one another or reconnect with people you have lost contact for. This “thing” blew up and has become something phenomenal. This phenom has changed our society. It has changed people. And the change isn’t for the better. Continue reading
Oh, so you’re that fan…
So you’re that fan. You know, the one that played high school football. Well, kind of. You were on the team but never really made it on the field due to lack of ability. That, of course, is the truth. As far as people who didn’t grow up with you know you were the quarterback that led your team to a couple of fourth quarter comebacks and on to the state football playoffs. You can say that. Are they really going to take the time to look it up? No. Of course that was back in the day when you were fit and in shape. You didn’t carry the 270lb belly keg that you currently have. Update: “Baseball: It’s just a game”
Two months ago I was standing on a baseball field when sports and life were put into perspective. Sports has helped us cope with many things, but at the end of the day it truly is just a game and means a lot less than we try to make it out to be. I shared my experience through this blog. And if you haven’t read it you can do so by clicking here. I wrote the story to express my thoughts and share what I had just taken in. The response was incredible. It was overwhelming. The blog has been viewed more times than I could have imagined. Emails poured into my inbox, some stopped to comment and others spread it on to their friends. The story was ran in newspapers in Shelton and Gibbon and for that I owe Steve Glenn a big thank you. I asked for anyone to share an update on the young man in the story. Tonight I received one that will explain everything the young man went through and still goes through as he continues his recovery. I wanted to share the update to anyone who found interest in the blog I wrote.
Here is the update: Continue reading
Courageous: A must see
By now you have probably heard of the movie Courageous, perhaps you haven’t. I heard about this movie a few months ago and have anticipated it hitting theaters. On Sept. 30, it did. Some people will be turned off by its religious appeal. Some might think its “just another one of those movies”. Keep reading and without spoiling the movie I am going to attempt to get you to understand why this is a must see for not only every guy in America, but women as well. Continue reading
The road back to relevance…
Doane College football was once relevant. It competed for conference championships, was ranked in national polls and even made it to the playoffs. Since 2003, the Tigers haven’t been ranked, not even close, until today. The NAIA announced its weekly top 25 poll this afternoon and Doane sat at No. 21. This is the first ranking in the national poll for the Tigers since the September 9, 2003 poll that had Doane at No. 23. Continue reading
The Run….
It’s the run. Some of you know the run. Some of you may not. It’s the run that allows you to think about life, everything. It’s you, alone in the world. You are frustrated from the day, whether it’s work, a relationship or just life struggles, but you need to release the frustration so you go for a run. On this run, different from most days, nothing will stop you. You don’t have a distance in mind. There is not a time you are trying to beat. There’s no one to judge you on your speed or pace.
Some of you may have a voice in your head, that sounds similar to this….. Continue reading
Baseball: It’s just a game
Too many times parents, fans, players, coaches and officials get so wrapped up in a sports contest the idea that “it’s just a game” is lost. The players get yelled at or frustrated with one another. Fans yell obscene things when they disagree with the judgement of an official. And sometimes parents try to get more out of their kids than the kids want to give. Anyone who attended the Nebraska Class B Juniors Legion state baseball tournament was reminded that sometimes there is more to the game. Continue reading
Tressel out, insert candidate name here
News this morning that Jim Tressel had resigned as the head coach of Ohio State didn’t shock too many. With the recent events in the football program replacing the coach seemed inevitable. Speculation now begins on who could be the next Buckeyes head coach. Luke Fickell has been named the interim head coach for the 2011 season. You may recall that Fickell was scheduled to be the Buckeyes head coach during the five-game suspension for Tressel. Now he will get his chance earlier than expected to be the boss of the Buckeye program. Continue reading
Fan puts digits on sign, inbox flooded
A Milwaukee Brewers fan asked Ryan Braun to marry her during a game. Like hundreds of others have done before with a sign at the game. One thing she did to separate herself from the others was put her cell phone number on the sign. The idea seemed like a good one….then it happened. The woman received hundreds of phone calls and text messages and even had her voicemail inbox so full when Braun tried to actually give her a call he couldn’t leave a message. Continue reading
The Greatest Play In Baseball
There have been many fantastic plays throughout the years. Those plays have made baseball America’s favorite past time. You have seen highlights of guys running through walls to make a catch, falling over the dugout railing, big hits that surprised everyone and more. But the greatest play in baseball did not take place with the ball live. We go back to 1976 where 35 years ago to this day, Rick Monday did something that will make any American proud. Watch it for yourself: Continue reading
Kevin Na sets record with 16 on par-4 ninth
Golf is an interesting game. It is difficult though not strenuous….Well, generally. Kevin Na found a way to make this game as stressful as it can be. The guy carded a 16 on a Par-4 hole in the 2011 Valero Texas Open. Na not only hit the ball into the woods, but he went there a second time. Then chose to play the ball. On one of his shots the ball hits a tree, then hits Na which is another penalty. If you are a golfer this is brutal to watch. Na himself, nor the caddy are sure about how to count the strokes by the time he gets out of the woods. Continue reading
MLB season is upside down
Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates…..
Tampa Bay Rays, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants…..
In recent years these teams have been grouped together. The top four have been sitting in the bottom of their respective divisions, while the bottom four have been at the top of their divisions fighting for the post season and winning pennants. Continue reading
Youngster getting attention at Augusta National
The 2011 Master’s is underway with golfers beginning play at 7:40 a.m. ET. The tournament always has enough attention, but this year there is one young player who has grabbed some of his own. Rickie Fowler is a rising star. Fowler is the only player to be named the NCAA Player of the Year as a freshman. After a solid career at Oklahoma State, the youngster is taking his shot at professional golf. According to his website, Fowler traded in his dirt bike for a golf cart at the age of 14. He is gaining attention, not only because some experts think he has a shot to win the Master’s, but also because of the way he has been dressing at Augusta National. Continue reading
