Coyote Corner again

I had the chance to be on Coyote Corner for the second time this season with Jay Elsen on Midco Sports. I always enjoy being on the show and any chance to talk about sports. This week was a little different with a tough season right now for the Coyotes, but we made it through and Jay always does a fine job as the host. Also in the show Jay will preview the matchup with FCS No. 1 North Dakota State and Alex Heinert has a feature on a couple of players who have bounced back from injury.

Big thanks to Jay for asking me to be on the show again, Alex for his work as the producer of the show and Toby who is behind the scenes making sure everything is on time.

Check out this week’s episode of Coyote Corner:

AL Wild Card: It’s the Royals time!

imagesYou’ve heard, I’m sure, a few times the Royals are into the postseason for the first time since 1985. Of course, that was a World Series championship against the I-70 rivals. It’s been a long time. And for Royals fans, the past five years we have listened to “experts” talk about the talented minor league system the Royals have put together. We have seen guys like Gordon, Hosmer, Moustakas and others have tremendous success in Omaha and struggle when they get to the big club. Then, it finally started to come together. The Royals have put together a solid rotation, they have one of the best 7, 8, 9th inning setups in all of baseball and the lineup has been able to do enough.  Continue reading

Appearance on Coyote Corner

John tv selfie

We leave in a selfie world so here is a pre-tv selfie!

In case you missed it, this week I had a chance to make an appearance on Coyote Corner. The show is a product of Midco Sports Network, based is Sioux Falls. Jay Elsen hosts the show every week and he takes a look back at the previous game for the University of South Dakota. This week I joined him for “Saturday Storylines” and also a look at the Missouri Valley Football Conference. I’ve always enjoyed the chance to be on a show at Midco. This is my second appearance on Coyote Corner and I also had the chance to sit in on Benchwarmers.

I invite you to check out the show. Not only this week because I am on it, but each and every week. Jay is a great host who knows his stuff and Alex Heinert does a fantastic job producing the show. Anyway, here is this week’s episode. Check it out!

Yankton homecoming moved four hours away

downloadThere has been a lot of conversation and, naturally, a lot of disappointment for Yankton fans over the last two days after we learned the suspended game between Yankton and Aberdeen Central will now be played in Aberdeen. Yes, Yankton’s homecoming game. How does this happen?

Let’s start with Friday, September 19th. Yankton enters the game 3-0 and Aberdeen Central is 2-1, with both teams knowing this is a huge game for them. And both play like it. The game goes back and forth and just before halftime Yankton gave the ball back to the Golden Eagles. Aberdeen Central moves down the field and scores with 13 seconds left in the half. On the ensuing kickoff Yankton nearly answered with a kickoff return into Aberdeen Central territory with just five seconds left. I was in favor of giving the kicker, Brady Hale, a chance at a field goal, but if I remember correctly it would have been about a 62 yard field goal. That’s a long shot, obviously, but the kid has a cannon for a leg. The half ends with Yankton trailing 20-17.  Continue reading

Abandoned blog

For some reason I apparently abandoned this blog. I didn’t  forget about it because I think about it quite often and I actually think about posting something, but most of the time I am probably just too lazy. The last post on here was in March of 2013, which, if you are keeping count, was 18 months ago. I am actually going to make an attempt to update this thing more than once every year and a half. No promises, because who knows what will happen. I was asked once to do a blog so some people who are interested can keep up with what I am doing so I will attempt to do that, especially when women’s basketball season rolls around and I get the opportunity to travel with the USD women’s basketball team. Stay up to date on out trips here. Thanks for checking out my blog and I will make an effort to get it back on track.

Basketball at Devaney is now a memory

Proor to Wynot vs Spalding/Spalding Academy for Nebraska Class D2 state championship on March 9, 2013.

For years the Bob Devaney Sports Center has been synonymous with University of Nebraska basketball. While the facility lacked successful home teams in many of those years it is still the house of many memories. For players, coaches and fans of the Cornhuskers the facility has been home sweet home. For high schools across the state it has been the goal at the beginning of the season. Continue reading

Chiefs need QB, is the draft the answer?

DraftIt’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs need to address the quarterback position. Matt Cassel will be run out of town at the first opportunity when the season is over. Brady Quinn has had an opportunity to prove himself and it hasn’t happened. With the NFL season coming to an end the focus will turn to the draft. Kansas City will be sitting at the top of the draft, where they have not drafted well in the Scott Pioli era. So, who’s available? Continue reading

Blog hiatus over….

Apparently I took a hiatus from this blog. I don’t know if many people read it. I do know a few posts have received an unbelievable number of responses, views, etc. I can’t thank the people who read this regularly, occasionally or rarely enough. This thing was started as a simple place to share thoughts or sometimes I find it easier to deal with things by writing about it. I have not received many views the past few months and I shouldn’t have because apparently I took a break from blogging. So why the break?

The break was unplanned and a short time before my last post I was frequently updating on different things. It was basically a break that happened because of life. So here is an update:

In the spring I was contacted about a job opening. I didn’t apply for it. I decided that if someone contacts you it is worth a listen. So I did. After conversations with this potential employer I didn’t feel it was a fit and was content with staying in Chadron, where I felt like I had unfinished business. I was asked to make a trip to the new place and at least check it out and I did. Things clicked. I learned more about the opportunity I would have and realized it was the next step in the dream I began chasing many years ago. The nice thing about the new place was it would give me the opportunity to have a Sports Talk show, something I haven’t done since college. After much thought I decided it was the move that I was supposed to take and life turned to a new direction.

Leaving behind Chadron was not easy….not in the slightest. I will explain more at a later blog.

I moved to Yankton, SD in July and began work for 5 Star Communications as the Sports Director for Classic Hits 106.3 and ESPN Radio 1570. The job allows me to focus on sports, do a sports talk show, cover a DI university (USD) and do play-by-play of high school sports, among other things. It has been an exciting last few months and each day I realize the move was the right one for me.

There will come a time when you have to make a decision about moving or something big in your life that you will have to decide on. The only advice I have is to look at the big picture. Through the scope I thought staying in Chadron was the best thing for me. In the big picture this move appears and feels like the right one.

It’s a challenging job, but what dream chasing job isn’t?

I’ve also joined the station team for the YankTON challenge. We are working hard to drop some pounds and get in shape. It has definitely been disheartening at times and tough, but you just gotta get your mind right and get after it. It’s the first step to completing a Triathlon that I still think I will attempt very soon. (Stay tuned for that).

So life has changed and it drove me away from the blogging world, but I will work to get back to updating this thing with thoughts on sports and life…….because that is my life.

Life is crazy

Life is crazy. It gives you crazy challenges and then makes everything okay. Then before you know it the good is gone and you are back to the way things were, but there still is good. Is that confusing? It has to be one of the most confusing things that make sense. But that’s life. If we could figure it all out then it wouldn’t be any fun. Continue reading

Heee’s baaaaack – Mbakwe returning to Minnesota

Trevor Mbakwe and the University of Minnesota has announced the star forward will return for another season.

Mbakwe was granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA and there was question whether or not he would return. Earlier this month he tweeted about “Unfinished Business” but said that was not an official return announcement. Continue reading

Polar Plunge a success

Sometimes doing things to make yourself happy is good. Sometimes doing something to see someone else smile is better. When you can combine the two it is one of the greatest feelings you can possibly have.

In January I made a vow to myself that I was going to start living a better life. It’s not that I have been living life in a horrible way, but I do believe we can all get better with certain things. One of the things I wanted to do was do something for a good cause. I have always thought it would be fun to try a polar plunge. I came across one less than two hours away and began to ponder whether or not to do it. The plunge was a fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Nebraska. Continue reading

Bracket Projection: Nebraska C1 Girls State Basketball

The district finals are nearly set with one sub-district between Concordia and Fort Calhoun to finish. I decided to try and project a bracket for the C1 State Tournament. Chadron appears to have locked in the No. 1 seed in the tournament, regardless of the district final outcome. A loss would still keep the Lady Cardinals 0.25 points ahead of No. 2 Sandy Creek. With that said, the Lady Cardinals will play the winner of the C1-3 district which could be Arlington (11-10), Concordia (16-4) or Fort Calhoun (7-12).  Continue reading

My sister has joined the wonderful world of blogging. This is her first post!!

tehosick's avatarElsie's Expressions

I had often been interested in starting a Blog, however I was unsure if I could keep up on it or not? I am an extremely busy wife and mother and time does not always work in my favor. I am sure many of you can relate. I have been following a few different people with their blogs and I finally decided, this would be a great way for me to express my thoughts and ideas on my own time, with the hope that I bring as much joy to others lives, as other bloggers has mine. So what is a blog?

One of the blogs that I follow regularly is “Thayer’s Thoughts”. This amazing young writer has the ability to keep you up to date on new happenings in the world around us. The way he uses his words  motivates me to be an even better person. Do…

10,000 tweets and chirping

The day is February 15, 2012. As the afternoon speeds by I get on the computer to respond to a mention on Twitter. I glance up to the corner and see the numbers 9,998. As I send a reply and the eight rolls over to a nine I begin to realize that I have hit a milestone. There have been 10,000 entries in my Twitter life. This is a special moment. Blood, sweat and tears have poured into my Twitter success, or lack thereof. As I pondered what to submit as this memorable tweet I decided that 140 characters simply wasn’t enough. So I decided a blog would be the way to express myself with the milestone moment. Is it cheating? No. It’s using your resources! Continue reading

Commercial Sunday…

With Commercial Sunday, er….uh….Super Bowl Sunday in the air I thought it was time to go back and look at my best and worst from Super Bowl 45. None of this involves the game. It’s a look at best companies, worst companies, biggest fail (National Anthem) and the top ten commercials.

Take a look for yourself as we prepare for this year’s commercials. A 30-second spot this year costs nearly $3.5 million.

My Best and worst from Super Bowl 45

Perhaps someone will top it this year. We are a few hours away from knowing.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday!!!

The two are co-chairs of the search committee. They talk about what they are looking for in the next head coach at Chadron State College, a timeline and more.

NOTE: It may take a couple of minutes for the player to load.

Using surroundings as entertainment

You sit looking straight ahead as the pavement continues to disappear before you, mile-by-mile. Looking out the window there are open plains in every direction, only passing by the occasional feed lots and farms. The brown colored grass and weeds blend in with the turned up dirt in the fields. The occasional green tree  and road sign are all that give color to the land. The rolling hills make up the view as far as you can see. There isn’t much to look at for entertainment. Success, Love, Happiness….

We live life in search of many things, but when it is all said and done there are only three things we truly want to find: Success, Love, Happiness.

1. SUCCESS – We all set out to be successful beings. You define your own success. Some people search for professional success, while others are content with private success. Continue reading
